Home Barista – Coffee Course

From discovery to mastery – build your perfect cup of coffee step by step

Making good coffee isn’t just a trick, but a combination of flavour, technique and intuition. In this home barista course, you’ll take five evenings to truly understand coffee. Each evening builds logically on the previous one, so that knowledge, skill and confidence grow together. By following the entire course, you’ll learn not only how to make coffee, but above all why – and you’ll taste the difference in every cup.

Day 1 – Nice to meet you

  • An introduction to coffee (What is coffee, and what goes into making a cup of it?)

Your journey as a barista begins with tasting, discovering and comparing. Through interactive exercises, you’ll be introduced to the wonderful world of coffee. You’ll learn to recognise the differences between commercial coffee and speciality coffee, Arabica and Robusta, washed and unwashed coffee, and experience how freshness affects flavour. This first evening lays the foundation for the entire programme: you’ll discover your preferences and learn to consciously choose the coffee you’ll be working with in the subsequent training sessions.

Day 2 – Pure bliss

  • Espresso and other black coffee drinks made using an espresso machine

Now that you know which coffee suits you, we’ll delve into the heart of espresso. We’ll get to work with the espresso machine and the coffee grinder and explore how to set everything up just right. You’ll see, feel and taste how small adjustments can have a huge impact on flavour. Together, we’ll work towards an espresso that perfectly matches your preferences. We’ll also unpack the other pure coffee drinks on the menu. What’s the real difference between an Americano, a lungo and a long black? Why can’t you just make a single espresso? And what about the ristretto, and what is a ‘1-2-3’? This day will give you a firm grasp of extraction and balance.

Day 3 – White wonders

  • Cappuccino and other milk-based coffee drinks made using an espresso machine.

With a good espresso as our base, we’ll focus on milk and milk alternatives. You’ll learn how to make consistently perfect milk foam: with the right texture and temperature, time and time again. Which drink calls for thick or thin foam? What’s the difference between a latte and a caffè latte? And where does the macchiato fit into this picture? You’ll discover not only the theory, but above all what you like best – and perhaps this is where your very own signature drink will be born.

Day 4 – Artistic milk drinks

  • Latte Art training

Once you’ve mastered milk frothing, we’ll shift our focus to pouring. By playing with height, speed and movement, you’ll learn to create shapes in your foam. It takes a bit of practice (and sometimes thinking outside the box), but soon hearts, tulips and rosettes will appear in your cup – perhaps even a swan. This evening is all about finesse, confidence and fun. Discover if there’s a latte artist inside you and let your creations do the talking.

Day 5 – Slow Coffee

  • Slow Coffee training

We round off the programme with filter coffee: clear, smooth and full of nuance. You’ll discover that you can make impressive coffee even without an espresso machine. From gravity to pressure, infusion and even boiling – we’ll explore various brewing methods, culminating in the spectacular siphon bar. You’ll learn how extraction works and how you can influence it, so that every coffee is brought out to its best. A perfect finale that brings together everything you’ve learnt on this course.

In short:

Would you like to take your home coffee-making to a level that goes beyond individual tips and recipes? Then opt for the comprehensive home barista course, consisting of five evenings. By attending all the workshops, you’ll build a solid foundation, refine your palate and learn techniques that complement one another. This way, you’ll get the most out of your equipment, your coffee and yourself.
